TSSA ADM-I Training For Bouncy Castles in Ontario Canada

Behind the Scenes: Setting Up a TSSA-Certified Bouncy Castle in Ontario
By Dan Juneau – Ashlee’s Events

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into setting up a TSSA-certified bouncy castle unit in Ontario, I thought I’d take you behind the scenes today and show you just that. It’s not just about inflating something fun and colourful — it’s about safety, responsibility, and doing things the right way.

What Is a TSSA-Certified Unit?

In Ontario, inflatable amusement devices (like bouncy castles) fall under the oversight of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). That means every commercial unit used in public spaces must be inspected and certified. As operators, we must also hold an ADM-I certification (Amusement Device Mechanic – In-Training), which ensures we’ve been trained in safe setup, operation, and take-down procedures.

Step 1: Pre-Arrival Checks

Before even arriving on site, I check:

  • The TSSA device tag is attached and valid

  • The logbook is up to date

  • The weather conditions meet the safety guidelines (no excessive wind or rain)

  • All equipment (stakes, blower, tarp, extension cords, GFCI, etc.) is in excellent condition

Step 2: Arrival and Site Inspection

Once on site, I assess:

  • The surface — it needs to be level, clean, and free of sharp debris

  • Clearance — the unit requires several feet of space on all sides and overhead

  • Power access — a dedicated outlet is best, or I supply a certified generator

Step 3: Setup with Safety in Mind

After laying down the ground tarp:

  • The unit is fully unrolled and positioned properly

  • I connect the blower and anchor the blower tube securely

  • Then I inflate the unit, watching closely for any issues

Once inflated:

  • I stake or weight down every anchoring point, as per manufacturer and TSSA standards

  • I perform a walk-around inspection to ensure the structure is sound, seams are tight, and there’s no damage

  • GFCI is tested, and all electrical components are double-checked

Step 4: Documentation and Inspection Log

As part of the TSSA requirements:

  • I record all setup details in the device logbook

  • If this is a public event, I may coordinate with the TSSA or a certified inspector if needed

Step 5: Final Safety Walkthrough

Before any kids hop on:

  • I go over the rules with the event host

  • Provide a safety briefing sheet

  • Ensure there is adult supervision in place at all times

Why All This Matters

At Ashlee’s Events, safety is our top priority. Getting TSSA-certified wasn’t just about compliance — it was about taking our responsibility seriously. As a parent myself, I know the peace of mind that comes with knowing your child is safe while they’re having fun.
